LETTER TO OAU FRESHERS(MUST READ)

Ex-Angolans Society,

OAU,

Ile-Ife,Osun State.

34th,March,1998.

Dear Freshers,
I am writting this letter because I care for you,I am not writting it to scare or amuse any of you.You can decide how you want to make use of this letter. This letter is to enlighten you on what to expect when you get into the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University. Stay glued till the end because I will be giving you tips on how to counter them.

First and foremost, I can assure you that the first set of people you will meet on Oau campus is our beloved Christian brothers. Those guys can disturb, even when you tell them you already have a church from home, they will still find a way of persuading you to attend their church but don't be scared, the disturbance will die down after a few weeks.

Secondly, ARO! ! Never underestimate the power of Aro, it is believed that a student once committed suicide because he was arod, LOL, that was a joke but make sure you don't fall into the hands of awo boys. The craziest part is that there is no such thing as gender discrimination when it's time for aro, whether you are a boy, girl or heamaphrodite, you will be arod, aro is for all. My advice to you when you are about to be arod is to pull your shoes and run very fast or turn back to where you are coming from.

Thirdly, Whyning. Some people may think that whyning and aro are the same but it is wrong. Whyning is more like deceit. Let's say you take your school bag and decide to go and read, then a friend sees you and starts calling you names like Jackie Chan, Jack Daniels, Jackson, Jackoo, Jack the giant slayer. All these names because you decided to go and read, or maybe you decide to wear a shirt your mom bought for you, then they start calling you names like Freshest boy in Angola, Mr fresher, Wiz kid brother, money bag, all because of one shirt. My advice on how to counter whyning in OAU is to start cursing those people that always whyne you, I don't mean serious cursing ooo! Just curse them out loud so they will know what to expect when they whyne you next time.

Another expectation is the early morning classes. Dear freshers, especially those of you taking CHM101, get ready for crazy early morning classes. I am talking from experience. Imagine a class scheduled to start by 8 am and you come by 6 am only to meet a thousand seater lecture theatre already filled with students, you will be asking yourself whether they slept there. I will give you two sure ways you can counter early morning classes. It's either you start sleeping in the lecture theatre or you go as early as 5 am to get something tangible from the class.

Another expectation is the oppression from stalites. Please note, not everyone may be oppressed but most guys will be oppressed. At this point I have to tell you about Anglomoz. Anglomoz is a space between Angola hall and Mozambique hall where different activities take place. Activities you will get to know when you get into OAU. I am telling you this so it will not lead to stories that touch. Take for instance, you meet a beautiful girl and you believe you have a future with her, all of a sudden you see her hopping into a beautiful Mercedes benz in Anglomoz, my brother take heart, that's what a stalite can do. Nowadays, you don't need to talk much to a girl once you have a car in OAU, all you need to do is park, tell her to hop in and she is yours. We also know that girls are into older guys so they don't necessarily need a car when they want to oppress you, take note. My advice on this one is to stay away from those girls or if you are lucky enough, find a girl that is honest and all that.

The next expectation is the partying/praying. Get ready for different parties that will be tropping in from different angles. Students in OAU can party up to the extent that they party during exams and even on sunday, but this does not mean that OAU is a school for partying, when it's time for church, you can't count the amount of venues they use for service, It's so crazy that people even use the football field for Sunday service, I can say that there are over fifty fellowships on OAU campus and still counting. So if you are the type that likes partying, WELCOME and if you are that type that prays very well, WELCOME. I have no advice for this part because it depends on you.

Lastly, get ready to read and meet the readers. You might be reading for two hours at home and think you can read, my brother and sister that is child's play. In OAU, you will meet people that can read for Africa and even the whole world. They read all through the day and night, even when there is no light, they will burn like ten candles reading all through the night. You will meet people that have turned the library to their hostel, they don't leave the library except when they pursue them for reading too much. I am not telling you all these to scare you but to prepare you for the battle ahead.

I believe I have tried my best to prepare you on what to expect in OAU as a fresher. I hope I don't scare or amuse any of you. Make use of this letter wisely.
I leave you all in peace.

Yours stalites,
Marshall Black.
